What does your wardrobe tell about you?

Ethics and sustainability are growing in prominence globally. People are taking an increasing interest in the ethical practices of the brands they buy from, and are interested where and how their clothes have been produced. Awareness around issues in fashion industry has led to a rise in what is known as conscious consumption, a movement of people who seek out ways to make positive decisions about what to buy and look for a solution to the negative impact consumerism is having on our world. The movement can be seen as an alternative choice against unethical “fast fashion” - and that movement is what we need!

Luckily the trend is settling amongst many fashion producers and more brands have taken an interest towards ethical and sustainable fashion to save our planet. Caring for nature and community, loyalty to authenticity is also our mission at VALO Design. We believe good things come through consciousness of every action and positive attitude towards yourself and everyone around you.

Our privilege is to make natural and durable unisex clothes that are made for endure wearing, while they feel great on your skin. All our fabrics are handpicked from local fabric producers, supporting the regional suppliers to thrive. We use only natural materials such as cotton, organic cotton, linen and bamboo instead of synthetic, because they are - after all - more environmentally friendly. Our new favourite is bamboo - as a raw material, bamboo is nature’s answer to our farming and agricultural problems within the clothing industry. It is one of the fastest growing plants on earth and it does not need any water irrigation or pesticides to grow. Big bonus with natural materials is that they decompose faster than plastic when they have come to an end.

But choosing the right materials is not the only thing that should be taken into consideration when producing clothes. It is also important to live in harmony with the local manufacturers as a business partner, in a relationship where everybody benefits in their own sector. We work together with a small Balinese, family run company that employs two tailors and a pattern maker, and their whole subsistence is covered by our collaboration. They all have become like an extended family to us, part of our VALO tribe, and we are more than just business partners. It means a world to us to know that something we do can also help others to prosper.

We believe that information about supply chains, about materials and processes can be an inspiring part of the brand and product’s story. It is going to be a long journey but if we are going to tackle the huge impact our current production and consumption levels have on the world’s ecosystem, we must begin by understanding where our products come from and who is it that makes them.

Be responsible. Know where your clothes come from.
